As families face challenges associated with food scarcity, schools within the district are providing assistance to support families in need.
In 2009, Westfield Technical Academy created a Food Pantry to support students and families. In 2014, a Food Pantry Committee was established to respond to the growing needs surrounding food scarcity, and Highland and Russell Elementary Schools established Food Pantries. This year, South Middle School, Franklin Avenue, and Paper Mill Elementary Schools are developing pantries. Through collaborative efforts between the schools, Westfield State University Nursing Program, and Westfield Food Pantry, the sites are able to provide nonperishable goods and hygiene products to families. Future plans include offering perishable items to families and expanding the Food Pantries within the district.
