Math Grant

The School Committee accepted two grants at its Jan. 24 meeting, including a Math Acceleration Academies grant of $160,000 which will allow the district to fund math classes over April school vacation week for students who are struggling.

“We’re probably going to see more of this from the state. COVID learning loss won’t be recovered in one year,” Czaporowski said. He said the Math Acceleration Academies grant will fund extra classes for four days, geared to students who are struggling, based on their MCAS test scores.

Westfield Grants Manager Joanne Lemelin said the federal grant from the Center for Strategic Initiatives will be spent on a stipend for teachers, money for a site coordinator, support staff, overtime, and business supplies. She said the schools held similar programs last summer.
