Special Education Updates

Dear Westfield Parents of Special Education students,

I would like to provide you with an update regarding special education services and staffing.  We have been able to contract with two independent school psychologists. Although they are limited in the number of assessments they can complete, I am hoping this will help with the initial and reevaluation process.

After consulting with the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education, the district will conduct initial evaluations, followed by reevaluations to ensure that we can accommodate all students.  We have also been able to acquire a speech therapist who can conduct evaluations and provide services in a virtual format. We are continuing to look for speech staff who can service students in-person.  We are recruiting by posting the positions and contacting vendors/outside agencies to fill these positions.

Please know that your children’s needs are our top priority, and we are working hard to fill in the gaps.  We will continue to take the necessary steps to work on solving this problem and provide the services your children deserve. I will continue to provide monthly updates.

On November 28 and 29, the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education visited schools, conducted interviews, and reviewed district policies as part of the Tiered Focus Monitoring which occurs every three years. Results of this process will be provided by DESE within the next few months.

We are very appreciative of your support and dedication to your child’s education. Please do not hesitate to contact the special education department if you need any assistance.

I wish you and your family a healthy, happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year!

Respectfully,

Deb Ecker
