WVS tour participants stand on the Westfield Green downtown with while tour guide, Cindy Gaylord, speaks about local monuments and landmarks.

Before the Thanksgiving break, Westfield Virtual School held our first in-person outing for students.  For this event, WVS was led on a tour of downtown Westfield’s Historical Monuments by the Westfield Historical Commission’s Chairperson, Cindy Gaylord.

All students of WVS, grades K through 8, had the opportunity to attend the tour in person and have some face-to-face interaction with their peers outdoors.  WVS selected this tour because of its accessibility to all students.  We recognize the importance of being inclusive to all and that our students attend Virtual School for various reasons, therefore we aim to create accessible opportunities for our whole school community.  The Westfield Historical Commission has done amazing work to make their tours available virtually.  These educational opportunities are engaging and interactive for all ages and we are looking forward to additional opportunities like this in the near future.

What better way to explore the rich history of our town, than by touring with our own time travel expert, Mr. Castonguay!  Mr. David Castonguay is the WVS History teacher for grades 5-8, and has a creative, immersive approach to his classes that take students back in time in fun, engaging ways.

Westfield Virtual School would like to extend a humongous thank you to Cindy Gaylord for helping to make this happen for our students.  Gaylord, not only Chairperson for the Historical Commission, but also a former Westfield teacher, was wonderful at engaging and leading the students on the tour.  It was thoughtfully a laid out, manageable walking distance for all in our diverse group, and a fun educational experience, as well!  Our WVS teachers were so excited to be able to say hello to their students in person and it was an afternoon filled with smiles for all.
