Attendance Matters

Dear WPS Families,

Since the pandemic, school districts across the nation have seen a substantial increase in student absenteeism.  Of note is a surge in the number of students that are considered chronically absent, meaning that they are missing over ten percent, 18 days or more, of the school year. As a district, we have developed and maintained an Attendance Task Force to implement strategies that improve student attendance rates.  So far this year, we have seen some improvement over the past few years but have yet to reach pre-pandemic attendance numbers. Students consistently attending school is of paramount importance for many reasons:

1.      Academic Learning: School provides structured learning environments where students can acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies across various subjects. It offers a curriculum designed to foster intellectual growth and critical thinking abilities.

2.      Social Development: Schools are hubs for social interaction where students learn to collaborate, communicate, and build relationships with peers and teachers. They develop essential social skills such as teamwork, empathy, and conflict resolution, which are crucial for success in personal and professional life.

3.      Emotional Well-being: School environments offer emotional support and guidance through interactions with teachers, counselors, and classmates. Attending school allows students to access resources for mental health support, reducing feelings of isolation and fostering a sense of belonging within a community.

4.      Structured Routine: School provides a structured routine that helps students develop discipline, time management skills, and responsibility. Consistent attendance establishes habits that contribute to academic success and long-term productivity.

5.      Extracurricular Opportunities: Schools offer a variety of extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, and arts programs that allow students to explore their interests, talents, and passions beyond the classroom. Participation in these activities enhances personal growth and provides avenues for self-expression and creativity, as well as creating friendships that often outlive students’ time in our district.

6.      Preparation for Future Opportunities: Education is a fundamental pathway to future opportunities, including higher education, career prospects, and personal fulfillment. Attending school equips students with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications necessary to pursue their goals and aspirations and have many options for post-secondary education and or careers after they graduate.

7.      Community Engagement: Schools serve as community centers that bring together students, families, educators, and local stakeholders. They facilitate community engagement and collaboration, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the education and well-being of young people.

8.      Civic Engagement: Education plays a crucial role in fostering informed citizenship and civic engagement. By learning about history, government, and societal issues, students develop the knowledge and awareness needed to participate actively in democratic processes and contribute positively to their communities.

While we still encourage parents and guardians not to send their sick children to school, we know that regular school attendance is essential for their academic, social, emotional, and personal development. It provides a foundation for lifelong learning, personal growth, and active participation in society. Please reach out to your child’s building Principal with any questions or concerns about student attendance.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Czaporowski
