Goals

When Superintendent Stefan Czaporowski presented his goals for the current school year to the School Committee at the Oct. 16 meeting, he said his focus this year will be on student achievement and attendance, school climate and equity, maintenance and grounds, and on developing an ideal portrait of a graduate from the Westfield public schools.

Czaporowski said Westfield is performing much better than the state as a whole in reducing chronic absenteeism, but attendance levels have still not returned to where they were before COVID-19, and this remains an area of focus. He said last year’s overall attendance was 92%, whereas before COVID, it was 95%. So far this year, the district has seen 93.9% attendance.

Last year, 23.8% of students were considered chronically absent, meaning they had missed 18 or more days — 10% of the school year. This year, to date, 15.3% of students fall into that category, but Czaporowski noted that cold and flu season hasn’t arrived yet.
