The No. 9 Westfield football team didn’t have much to celebrate about during last weekend’s season-opening loss to Milford.
One week later, though, that previous mindset changed.
So instead of letting history repeat itself, the Bombers erupted for 37 second-quarter points en route to an impressive 52-14 win during their home opener against Pathfinder Tech on Friday night.

After going 12-0 during the regular season last fall, the Western Massachusetts gymnastics championship will always be “salt on the wound” for Westfield gymnastics coach Christina Mobrice.
Despite carrying a perfect record into the final meet, the Bombers missed out on the title by 0.775 points.
“The thing with any championship, it’s about who has a better day that day,” she said. “Every team going in had a strong group of girls. We came in second, and we have some work to do.”
The good news for Mobrice, Annika Van Oostveen, who finished first in the All-Around in the championship, is back. And the senior is already picking up where she left off.
Van Oostveen took home the high score (35.2) for the All-Around Wednesday at Agawam High School as Westfield opened the new season with a first-place finish.
The Bombers’ score of 138.05 edged them over second-place Agawam (133.1). Minnechaug (128.3) and Chicopee Comprehensive (118.1) rounded out third and fourth place.
“The girls did a great job. They came in mentally strong,” Mobrice said.

Culinary Arts 2 students filled the hallways with the pleasant aroma of their latest creations, including savory pizza, and a variety of muffins.

More than 20 people, some virtually, attended the first Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) meeting of the school year on Sept. 11 in the Westfield River Elementary library to meet Gregory Rosenthal, Westfield’s new administrator of special services and student support services.
Most recently, Rosenthal, who started on July 1, was the director of special education and student services for the Douglas Public Schools. Prior to that role, he had a similar one with the Northbridge Public Schools. He has also worked as a special education teacher and administrator in public schools and out-of-district private special education schools.
