Curriculum & Instruction

Welcome to the Westfield Public Schools Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Our department provides support to all educators in all aspects of teaching and learning as outlined in our Strategy for Continuous Improvement.

Westfield promotes the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach to instruction with the intention to make learning for all students both rigorous and relevant. Through a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), we address academic as well as social-emotional / behavioral learning.

We work with school leadership teams to further strategic goals using several approaches. The Learning Walkthrough Process is a strategy being used to identify areas of growth around a focus of inquiry determined by the school’s leadership team. Instructional coaching of teachers by content experts provides job-embedded professional learning, through the use of research-based instructional practices and high-quality instructional resources. Professional development opportunities are provided by district experts as well as partners outside our organization to ensure that all educators have opportunities to develop in their content knowledge, their own identified areas of professional practice, and in the instructional shifts required of newly revised curriculum frameworks. Professional development is offered in several ways, including during the school day, after school, and during the summer months.

Content Area Supervisors, Instructional Coaches, and Lead Teachers facilitate monthly Professional Learning Communities (PLC) meetings with the common goal of engaging all learners in order to foster student growth and achievement. Teacher PLCs meet weekly to interpret Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, create WPS Curriculum Maps, and address department or grade level team challenges using an inquiry problem solving process.
